Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) recently praised Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) for his surprising shift toward supporting Republican positions in the Senate. During a Newsmax interview, Tuberville remarked that Fetterman has “come a long way” and is now the “only” Democrat in the Senate “speaking common sense.”
“John Fetterman has come a long way. He’s had all kinds of health issues since he got here, but I’ll tell you what, he is the only leader out there that’s speaking common sense,” Tuberville said on Thursday.
Fetterman’s recent actions have made him stand out in a Senate dominated by Republicans. On multiple occasions, he has sided with the GOP, including backing their efforts to prevent a government shutdown. Fetterman warned his fellow Democrats that failure to support the Republican-crafted continuing resolution (CR) would lead the country into chaos and potentially cause a recession.
“Shut the government down, plunge the country into chaos, risk a recession, or exchange cloture for a 30-day CR that 100 percent fails,” Fetterman wrote Thursday.
In fact, Fetterman has aligned himself with Republicans in nearly every major issue brought to the Senate floor lately. His votes and statements often break away from the Democratic Party’s stance, earning him praise from Republicans like Tuberville.
“Fetterman is the only Democrat out there who’s speaking with common sense,” Tuberville added, pointing to how other Democrats have resisted the CR bill. Many Democratic lawmakers and their activists were strongly opposed to the measure, but Fetterman has repeatedly chosen to break ranks and back the Republican bill to avoid a government shutdown.
The Senate voted 54-46 on Friday to avoid a shutdown, with Fetterman joining Sens. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Angus King (I-Maine) in backing the CR.
Tuberville criticized the Democratic leadership for their reluctance to work with Republicans, labeling it the “woke mind virus.”
