Ted Cruz tried mocking James Talarico’s masculinity — the internet responded with one brutal word: Cancun

While appearing on Fox News Monday night, the Texas senator decided to take a swipe at Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico by questioning his masculinity. Yes, really.

“I gotta say, if you were making a list of 1,000 adjectives to describe this guy, ‘masculine’ would not be one of them,” Cruz told Sean Hannity. “I mean, this guy, if a stiff breeze came by, it would blow him over like a feather.”

The problem? Ted Cruz may be one of the last people in American politics who should be giving lectures about toughness.

Social media users immediately responded with a reminder that has followed Cruz for years: Cancun.

You remember. Back in 2021, as millions of Texans endured a devastating winter storm that left families without heat, power, and water, Cruz boarded a plane and headed to a luxury resort in Mexico.

The images became instantly iconic. And apparently, the internet has not forgotten.

“Masculine is what you did when Texans were freezing to death and you f—ed off to Cancun?” one user wrote.

Another added: “Right… like when it got cold in Texas and you booked it to Mexico like the big strong man you are.”

Others pointed out another uncomfortable chapter in Cruz’s political history: his unwavering loyalty to Donald Trump.

That’s the same Donald Trump who publicly insulted Cruz’s wife during the 2016 Republican primary and pushed conspiracy theories about Cruz’s father.

Most politicians would consider that a dealbreaker. Cruz endorsed Trump anyway.

“This the same dude that endorsed the guy who called his wife ugly?” wrote one X user.

“Says the man whose wife and father were demeaned by Trump but doesn’t speak up even once,” replied another user.

Chef José Andrés wrote: “.@SenTedCruz the guy who didn’t defend his wife and who left Texas as an brutal Snow storm was arriving to Texas, talking about the meaning of “masculine”…🤣🤣🤣😆😅😇hello?”

The wild part is that Cruz’s attack wasn’t even accurate.

During the interview, Cruz also mocked what he called Talarico’s “vegan, no meat campaign.”

There’s just one problem: Talarico isn’t vegan.

Last month, he joked that he’d been “eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton’s first indictment.”

So not only did Cruz launch a culture-war attack, but it appears he got the basic facts wrong in the process.

At this point, the entire episode felt like a perfect snapshot of modern Republican politics.

Instead of talking about housing costs, healthcare, public schools, infrastructure, or literally anything affecting Texans’ daily lives, the conversation devolved into whether a political opponent is sufficiently “masculine.”

And that’s where the hypocrisy becomes impossible to ignore.

Republicans routinely portray themselves as champions of strength, toughness, and personal responsibility. Yet one of the party’s most recognizable figures is still best known for fleeing the state during a crisis and then spending years defending a political leader who publicly humiliated his family.

Which is why Cruz’s comments backfired so spectacularly.

Because when your political brand already comes with the nickname “Cancun Ted,” attacking someone else’s toughness is always going to be a risky move.

And social media wasted no time reminding him of that fact.
