As President Donald Trump prepares to unveil his tariff policy on April 2, many of his supporters are growing worried about its impact, fearing it could disrupt the economic promises he made during his campaign.

In a recent interview with CNN’s John Berman, conservative commentator Scott Jennings was asked to sum up what Trump’s tariff plan would look like. Jennings said he wouldn’t want to predict what Trump will do, but explained that the president has been clear in his belief that tariffs will bring more manufacturing and jobs back to the U.S., which he sees as a boost for American workers.

Jennings pointed out that unions, like the United Auto Workers, support this view. But Berman pushed for more details, questioning what Trump’s next steps will be. With the president having mentioned “reciprocal” tariffs, but possibly backing off that idea, there’s uncertainty over what exactly the plan will entail.

Jennings explained that Trump’s core belief is that tariffs will force jobs and production back to the U.S., benefiting the working class in the long run. He suggested that if the plan is allowed to unfold, it could reverse the damage done by past trade policies that Trump believes have hurt American workers.

Peter Navarro, a senior counselor for trade, added that the tariffs could generate as much as $6 trillion in revenue over the next 10 years, though some economists warn this could essentially mean $6 trillion in new taxes.

Meanwhile, Democratic political consultant Maria Cardona pointed out the rising concerns among voters.

“This is something that Americans are actually becoming very concerned with, and that’s why you’re seeing the volatility in all of these special elections,” Cardona said. “The fact that we are even talking about the two special elections in Florida tomorrow, John, I think is an indication of how scared and sick voters are about what Trump is imposing on them versus what they expected because of his promises during the election.”

Trump also recently stated that his tariff plan will apply to all countries, not just the top 10 to 15 nations with the largest trade imbalances, as initially expected. This broader approach is adding to the uncertainty surrounding his economic strategy.
