In the hours leading up to his highly anticipated debate with Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump took to social media to share a flurry of cat memes, seemingly in response to unverified claims made by Republican vice-presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio). Vance had suggested that Haitian immigrants in Ohio were involved in eating pets, a claim that Trump seemed to promote with his meme posts.
True to form, Trump also used the time to air grievances on Truth Social. His latest target was Fox News, which he criticized for frequently featuring Michael Tyler, Harris’ publicist, as a guest. Trump accused Tyler of spreading lies, particularly regarding Project 2025—a far-right initiative backed by former Trump allies that he has previously supported. While Trump didn’t detail the specific falsehoods, he made it clear that he is displeased with Fox News, writing, “Fox tries to be so politically correct, when the other side plays for keeps,” and concluding his post with an emphatic, “RIDICULOUS!!!”
Trump and Harris are scheduled to face off in their first, and potentially only, 2024 debate on Tuesday evening. The 90-minute event, hosted by ABC News, will be moderated by David Muir, anchor of “World News Tonight,” and Linsey Davis, anchor of ABC News Live “Prime.” The debate will be conducted without an audience, and microphones will be muted when not in use by the candidates.
Recent polls indicate a close contest between Harris and Trump in the seven crucial battleground states that will play a pivotal role in deciding the next President.
This debate represents a significant opportunity for both candidates to potentially shift the dynamics of a race that has been tightly contested so far.
