Republican Michael Taylor, the mayor of Michigan’s 4th largest city, slammed President Donald Trump and his Republican allies for lying to the American people in order to undermine the legitimacy of the election results.
Taylor said the president knows he has lost the election and that his “temper tantrums” should be condemned by all “patriotic Americans.”
“President Trump is deliberately lying to Americans and the world about the Michigan election results in order to create uncertainty, fear and distrust in our democracy. His temper tantrums on Twitter and baseless lies about the election should be universally condemned by all patriotic Americans, regardless of who you voted for,” Taylor wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
The message was posted a day after the Wayne County Board of Canvassers made national headlines when the Republican members of the board — Monica Palmer and William Hartmann — initially declined to certify the results of the election in Wayne County.
However, after a severe backlash from people across the state, the board met again and the election results were certified. President Trump praised Palmer and Hartmann for their actions prior to them reversing course and certifying the results.
Taylor said the president’s “only hope is for Republican legislatures to overturn the will of their state’s voters” which would disenfranchise and invalidate the will of millions of voters.
“The President knows he lost and understands completely that on January 20, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. he will no longer be president; but his pride is more important to him than our nation and our democracy. This charade continues at a severe cost to our nation; we deserve better,” Taylor wrote.
Taylor then turned his focus to elected officials in Michigan and urged them to speak out as well because the efforts of Trump and his supporters are damaging to both the state and the nation.
“It is time for all Americans to demand honor, integrity and the truth from our President – particularly elected Republicans in Michigan who should take great offense to the President’s assault on the integrity of our state’s election,” Taylor wrote.
A lifelong Republican, Taylor became mayor in 2014 and has been reelected three times since then, including in 2019 for another two-year-term.
