A newly surfaced yearbook photo shows GOP vice presidential nominee JD Vance alongside three girls playfully posing at urinals in his high school’s bathroom.
The image, taken from the 2003 Middletown High School yearbook, features an 18-year-old Vance, then known as JD Hamel, standing next to the girls, who are positioned in front of the urinals. The playful snapshot was intended to highlight the involvement of the student government, of which Vance was the vice president during his senior year.
One of the girls in the photo explained to the Daily Mail that the image was meant to emphasize the authority of the female members of the student government. “We thought it would be funny,” she said, requesting anonymity. “It was meant to show the balance of power, as usually, all the officers were male.”
According to the Daily Mail, the other girls pictured were the student government president, treasurer, and secretary.
When questioned about the resurfaced photo, a spokesperson for Vance responded: “Kamala Harris created inflation that’s crushing American families, caused a historic crisis at our southern border, and allowed deadly fentanyl to flood into communities across our country, and this is what the media is worried about,” the spokesperson said. “A goofy high school yearbook from over 20 years ago? Get a life.”
Vance, who has been vocal about his opposition to gender-neutral bathrooms, previously questioned ambassadorial nominees about increasing such facilities in overseas locations.
Vance also scrutinized Stephanie S. Sullivan’s appointment as envoy to the African Union for her support of LGBTQ+ rights, including the display of a Pride flag at the U.S. Embassy in Ghana. “Why do we have a liberal white woman going to Africa and telling them they’re not civilized enough when it comes to transgender ideology?” Vance questioned during Sullivan’s appointment hearings.
