Melania refuses to appear with Trump when 35-year-old aide Natalie Harp is around: Report

Staff Writer

A Trump insider claims Melania Trump has deliberately avoided appearing with her husband when his 35-year-old assistant, Natalie Harp, is present, as the aide’s unusually close relationship with the president comes under scrutiny.

Melania Trump reportedly has a simple rule when it comes to one of her husband’s closest aides: If Harp is there, she isn’t.

That’s according to Trump biographer Michael Wolff, who claims the first lady has been deliberately keeping her distance from President Donald Trump when his 35-year-old assistant is around.

The allegations paint a picture of an unusual power struggle inside Trump’s orbit — with Harp allegedly becoming so influential that even the president’s wife has found herself pushed to the sidelines.

It’s important to note that these claims come from Wolff and other published accounts, and have not been independently verified. Melania’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But if Wolff’s account is accurate, Harp’s role around Trump is anything but ordinary.

In a recent post on his Substack newsletter Howl, Wolff wrote that Harp’s “central presence” in Trump’s life helped explain why Melania rarely appeared with him during the 2024 campaign.

“Melania, whose appearances with her husband were carefully negotiated and choreographed, would not show up if Harp was around,” Wolff wrote.

“Since Harp was always around, Melania never was.”

According to Wolff, Melania ultimately appeared with Trump only during the final week of the campaign.

The claim comes amid broader reports that Melania has maintained an unusually limited public schedule compared with previous first ladies.

According to the Daily Beast, she appeared publicly just 47 times following Trump’s inauguration in January 2025 and only 38 days during the first seven months of 2026.

Wolff takes that a step further, arguing that Harp’s influence extended beyond the White House staff.

“Harp superseded the White House staff and, as well, his wife and family,” he wrote.

And the stories about Harp’s proximity to Trump get even more unusual.

According to Wolff, Harp went to extraordinary lengths to remain close to Trump during his 2024 campaign.

When Trump’s operation moved from Palm Beach to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, in 2023, Wolff says Harp wasn’t given a room.

Apparently, that wasn’t going to stop her.

Wolff claims Harp initially set up a bed in the maids’ quarters before eventually moving even closer, allegedly camping out in the women’s locker room.

Other accounts have also described Harp’s devotion to Trump.

In Regime Change, New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan reportedly described a series of letters Harp wrote to Trump and left in his personal spaces.

One allegedly read: “You are all that matters to me.”

Harp has not publicly confirmed the allegations described in these accounts.

What about Melania?

Wolff claims the growing closeness between Trump and Harp contributed to Melania’s decision to keep her distance.

Melania also did not immediately move into the White House after Trump returned to office, with reports that she has spent substantial time in New York.

Wolff went even further, writing that Melania has essentially abandoned the traditional role of presidential spouse.

“Other than at ceremonial occasions, or in a strictly official capacity, she has given up the role of wife,” he wrote.

“Practically speaking, there is no room for her.”

That’s Wolff’s characterization — and it’s a particularly striking one.

The biographer also claims that people in Trump’s orbit don’t believe Harp and Trump are involved in a sexual relationship.

Instead, Wolff says, some believe Harp is intensely devoted to Trump and sees herself as a kind of “higher purpose bride.”

One Trump aide reportedly described the relationship to Wolff as “a Christian devotional relationship.”

### The White House isn’t amused

Trump’s team has responded to Wolff’s reporting with considerably less nuance.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle reportedly dismissed Wolff in spectacularly blunt terms, calling him a “professional scumbag and serial liar.”

Melania’s lawyer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

So, for now, the story comes down to competing accounts.

Wolff is portraying Harp as an extraordinarily influential figure who has become almost inseparable from Trump — so much so that he claims she has effectively displaced Trump’s staff and even his wife.

The White House says Wolff is simply a liar. And Melania isn’t saying much publicly.

But if Wolff’s account is even partly accurate, there’s a fascinating power dynamic unfolding behind the scenes of the Trump White House, and Harp appears to be sitting remarkably close to the center of it.
