Donald Trump’s last months in office were chaotic to say the least. As a result, Republicans split on condemning and defending the former president.
Recently, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) received backlash from her Republican colleagues for voting to impeach Donald Trump over his role in the insurrection that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.
One Republican did come to Cheney’s defense. In a statement released to CNN, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) praised Cheney.
“Liz Cheney is a leader with deep convictions and the courage to act on them,” McConnell said. “She is an important leader in our party and in our nation. I am grateful for her service and look forward to continuing to work with her on the crucial issues facing our nation.”
McConnell’s statement came one week before the start of Trump’s impeachment trail.
