Tom Hanks returned to Saturday Night Live on Sunday for the show’s 50th anniversary celebration — and of course, that was enough to send MAGA supporters into a meltdown.
Hanks brought back his character, Doug, the “Make America Great Again” hat-wearing, southern-accented Trump supporter who first made his debut in 2016. Doug’s return came during Black Jeopardy!, a parody game show where the questions favor Black contestants. And naturally, Doug had some very thoughtful opinions, like how church could solve all of society’s problems, and of course, suggesting a “White Jeopardy” show. Because why not?
This whole “Doug doesn’t want to shake hands with the Black host” bit was nothing new — it first made waves in 2016 when Doug refused to shake Kenan Thompson’s hand. Sunday night? Same thing. Doug hesitated, saying, “Don’t like that, whoa, whoa, whoa,” before reluctantly agreeing after Thompson reassured him, “No, no, it’s just a handshake.”
And guess what? MAGA supporters lost it. Benny Johnson, a conservative commentator, tweeted, “Donald Trump just won a landslide election and has never been more popular with Americans. They have learned nothing.”
Mario Nawfal, another right-wing voice, jumped in with “Hollywood still doesn’t get it: Portraying Trump supporters as racist caricatures while he’s winning record minority support. SNL’s trying 2016 jokes in 2025.”
And then there’s Link Lauren, who worked on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign, ranting, “This show wonders why their ratings are in the gutter. Trump won the popular vote. This tired trope that MAGA is racist is disgusting. SNL is an unfunny show for snobbish liberal elites. The current Republican Party is a big tent coalition compromised of many former Democrats. Good riddance, SNL!”
She complained that portraying MAGA followers as “racist is disgusting.”
It’s almost like they’re forgetting the part where they’re not supposed to wear their racism on their sleeves.
