Democrat Katie Hobbs has defeated MAGA Republican Kari Lake in Arizona’s race for governor, NBC News reports, dealing another blow to former President Donald Trump, who campaigned for Lake in the final weeks of the campaign.
Hobbs’ victory represents a blistering rebuke to a prominent election denier and comes against a Republican many thought was the strongest Trump ally running in swing states President Joe Biden carried in 2020.”
Lake, a former Fox News anchor who closely linked her campaign to Trump’s big lie of a rigged election in Arizona, focused her campaign on changing election laws.
At her election night event, Lake predicted victory “within hours,” telling her supporters: “we will declare victory and we will get to work turning this around. No more incompetency and no more corruption in Arizona elections. I love you.”
Hobbs and her allies centered the campaign on abortion rights, putting Republican-endorsed restrictions at the forefront of their message. Hobbs also sought to contrast their plans on inflation and immigration with Lake.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
