Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina had his own words used against him in a hard-hitting new ad from the Lincoln Project.
“If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait till the next election,” Graham, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, promised The Atlantic‘s Jeffrey Goldberg in October of 2018.
It wasn’t the only time Graham had made such a claim, as was pointed out by Vanita Gupta, the president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights.
Graham is facing a tough challenge from Democratic candidate Jaime Harrison, and as Trump and Mitch McConnell push the Senate to confirm whomever he nominates to replace late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Graham’s statements will are already being used against him.

“I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination." pic.twitter.com/quD1K5j9pz
