The internet is celebrating after a Colorado community came together to rescue a kitten whose head got stuck in a massive dumpster. The daring rescue, which involved firefighters, veterinary professionals, and a lot of teamwork, has captured the hearts of people far beyond Fort Collins.
It all started on Friday, November 15, when a curious kitten attempted to escape a large dumpster head-first through a small opening near the bottom. Unfortunately, its head became wedged in the tight space, leaving the tiny feline unable to free itself.
A concerned passerby quickly called 911, and the Poudre Fire Authority (PFA) sprang into action. Upon arriving at the scene, the firefighters quickly assessed that the only way to free the kitten would be to use heavy machinery and specialized tools, similar to those used in vehicle extrications.
“The dumpster’s strong material and the tight fit required precise, powerful tools,” the PFA wrote in a Facebook post. “We had to be extra careful to avoid injuring the kitten during the rescue.”

Knowing that the kitten would likely be stressed and frightened during the operation, the PFA called in reinforcements from Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dr. Amanda Cavanagh, the hospital’s urgent care expert, arrived to administer a sedative to help the kitten stay calm while the rescue operation took place.
With the kitten relaxed and in safe hands, the firefighters carefully cut into the dumpster near its head. After some tense moments, the kitten was successfully freed from its uncomfortable predicament.
“We’re thrilled to report that the rescue was successful, and this brave kitten is now recovering at NOCO Humane,” Colorado State University shared in an update on Facebook.
The kitten is currently in the care of NOCO Humane, where staff are hopeful that a “lucky family” will soon adopt the little survivor.
