Melania Trump is scrambling to distance herself from the latest controversy surrounding her stepson, Donald Trump Jr.
After a ProPublica investigation reported that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward Don Jr.’s lavish Bahamas wedding celebration, the first lady quickly moved to declare that she had nothing to do with it.
“Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev,” a spokesperson for the first lady told the Daily Mail. “Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning.”
The statement is notable for what it does — and doesn’t — say.
It distances Melania from Kremlev and the wedding’s finances, but offers no defense of her stepson.
According to ProPublica, Kremlev covered hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses for the three-day celebration in the Bahamas, including the rental of one of two private islands used for the festivities and a fireworks display. His team also helped plan the event.
Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, have acknowledged receiving what they described as an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from Kremlev.
Anderson called Kremlev a “dear friend” who hosted two nights of celebrations after the couple’s wedding. Trump Jr.’s spokesperson likewise described Kremlev as a personal friend rather than a business associate.
That has put the spotlight on Kremlev, who has been described in reporting as having close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The controversy has also prompted questions about why a Russian businessman with those connections was involved in financing such a lavish celebration for the president’s eldest son.
Attorney General Todd Blanche was asked about the matter Tuesday and indicated that he did not expect an investigation, saying he did not know Kremlev and questioning the characterization of him as a friend of Putin.
Melania’s distancing is especially notable given her public record of speaking about the human cost of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
In August 2025, she sent Putin a letter urging him to consider the suffering of children affected by the war. Trump later said he hand-delivered the letter to Putin during his Alaska summit.
Trump has also previously described conversations with Putin to Melania that did not go the way he expected.
In July, Trump recounted telling his wife that he had had a “wonderful conversation” with Putin about peace, only for Melania to point out that Russian attacks were continuing.
“I get home, I’d say, ‘first lady, I had the most wonderful talk with Vladimir. I think we’re finished,’” Trump recalled. “And then I’d turn on the television, or she’ll say to me one time, ‘Well, that’s strange because they just bombed a nursing home.’”
Now her own family is facing a different kind of Russia-related controversy.
And Melania is making sure her name is nowhere near it.
She did not attend Don Jr.’s Bahamas celebration. Neither did President Trump or their son Barron.
Other members of the Trump family did attend, however, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, Eric and Lara Trump, and Tiffany Trump and their spouses.
ProPublica reported that Kremlev and a group of other Russians attended the private-island festivities, a detail that reportedly puzzled some guests.
