Two Republican members of Congress have come forward, revealing that they’ve received death threats after voting against fellow GOP Representative Jim Jordan for the position of House Speaker.
The first to speak out was Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who announced in a press release that her office was inundated with a “barrage of threatening calls” and she personally “received credible death threats” after casting her vote against Jordan. This revelation comes just a day after she had initially supported Jordan, adding a dramatic twist to the unfolding political saga.
Freshman Representative Nick LaLota, another GOP member who voted for former New York Representative Lee Zeldin, shared details of a threat his office received on the same day.
LaLota took a defiant stance, asserting, “My vote card belongs to me and the people of NY’s First Congressional District. I will not succumb to threats. Rather, I’ll support a Speaker candidate who will fund the WTC Health Fund, Nat’l Flood Insurance and SALT, while keeping the gov’t open + secure border & cut spending.”
The threats follow a report by Politico that Republican Representative Don Bacon and his wife, Angie, received anonymous texts and emails urging Bacon to align with Jordan or face consequences.
In response to the alarming series of threats, Jordan took to social media, condemning “all threats against our colleagues” and calling for an end to the hostility, stating, “Stop. It’s abhorrent.”
With Jordan’s chances dwindling due to a growing number of Republicans voting against him, the Ohio Republican called off the third vote for now and said he would back a temporary U.S. House speaker for the next several months as he works to shore up support to win the gavel himself.
The political landscape remains tense and uncertain as the Republican party appears to be in perpetual fall.
