Bernie Kerik, the former NYPD Commissioner, has reached an agreement with special counsel Jack Smith to hand over records related to the investigation into Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a report by The Daily Beast.
Kerik had previously collected evidence of alleged election fraud for the President, but these claims were found to be baseless. Initially, he refused to cooperate with investigators seeking these documents, citing attorney-client privilege, as he was working for Trump’s lawyer, Rudy Giuliani. However, Kerik’s legal team, represented by Timothy Parlatore, eventually decided to waive the privilege and allow the Department of Justice access to the requested documents.
The records in question, totaling around 2,000 pages, document Kerik’s efforts to find evidence supporting the investigation into Trump’s involvement in election fraud.
Federal prosecutors consider these records crucial as they seek to understand Trump’s decision-making process when he made baseless accusations about the election being “rigged,” despite contrary advice from top advisers.
Kerik, who has a history of legal issues; pleaded guilty to eight felonies in 2009 related to allegations of lying during his vetting process to become homeland security secretary under the Bush administration. However, in 2020, Trump granted Kerik a pardon.
