Batya Ungar-Sargon, a columnist and self-described “MAGA fanatic,” told Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy on Sunday that President Donald Trump’s tariffs are key to solving what she calls the “crisis in masculinity” in the U.S.
Ungar-Sargon argued that the crisis began when American companies outsourced manual labor jobs overseas, leaving many men without a sense of purpose. She believes Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs, are an answer to this problem.
“Donald Trump is actually saying ‘no more’ to this and to the crisis in masculinity — which is of course why young men feel so attracted to what he’s offering,” she said.
According to Ungar-Sargon, Trump’s win in the 2024 election was partly due to the Democratic Party’s failure to support young men. Campos-Duffy agreed, adding that when young men suffer, young women also face negative consequences.
“The Democratic Party has failed young men,” Ungar-Sargon said. “They’re not even listening to them.”
In a previous interview with Bill Maher, Ungar-Sargon praised Trump for his commitment to working-class Americans, calling his agenda “socially moderate, anti-war, and anti-free-trade protectionist.” She also argued that Trump’s executive orders align with a “leftist agenda,” a claim that Maher quickly dismissed.
When asked about Trump’s controversial tariffs that rattled global markets, Ungar-Sargon defended the policies, claiming they were necessary to protect the “American Dream.” She accused Wall Street of undermining Trump’s agenda.
“But the rage that you see on Wall Street — what they are trying to do here is they are shorting the president’s agenda,” she said. “Wall Street thinks, after 60 years of being utterly catered to, that they control this country and that they should control the president and all of our elected officials.”
Ungar-Sargon blamed immigration for the loss of jobs that men once held in construction, manufacturing, and other physical labor fields. She pointed to the outsourcing of these jobs to other countries as a major factor in the decline of the working class.
“We shipped jobs that gave men who work with their hands for a living and rely on brawn and physicality off to other countries to build up their middle class,” she said.
She also criticized previous administrations for hiring “millions of illegals” to work in industries that used to offer opportunities for American men.
Meanwhile, political commentator Paul Begala disagreed with Ungar-Sargon’s view. Speaking on CNN, Begala said Trump’s trade war was hurting the very voters who helped elect him, potentially giving Democrats an opportunity to capitalize on their dissatisfaction.
His remarks came after podcast host Joe Rogan slammed Trump’s tariffs, particularly on Canada, calling them “stupid” and questioning why the U.S. was in a feud with its neighbor.
“Why are we upset at Canada? This is stupid, this over tariffs… We got to become friends with Canada again,” Rogan said on his show The Joe Rogan Experience.
