Stephen Moore, a former economic adviser to Trump, suggested on Fox News that if the president succeeds in his global trade war, he could earn a Nobel Peace Prize for improving the world economy. Speaking to host John Roberts on Tuesday, Moore argued that Trump’s tariffs, despite causing global market chaos, could ultimately lead to “good deals” and better economic conditions worldwide.
While some on the right, especially Trump loyalists at Fox News, continue to back the tariffs, others are starting to question their effectiveness. But during the broadcast of America’s Newsroom, first flagged by Media Matters, Moore and Roberts focused on the optimism of the market’s rebound. Noting that California Gov. Gavin Newsom had been “trying to cut side deals” with other nations, Roberts said that “he might be wise to stick with Trump” following reports of countries looking to negotiate lower tariffs with the president.
“I told you we’d see a turnaround when countries start calling Trump and making deals,” Moore said, praising the president as “the great dealmaker” and pointing to the rise in the Dow as evidence of progress. “This is a good day for investors,” he added. “It’s the old idea: buy low, sell high.”
Moore also suggested that while China may not be cooperating with the U.S., the tariffs could open the door for “free trade deals with everybody except China.” Roberts echoed Trump’s comments, pointing out that countries who negotiate early with the U.S. will fare well, while those who delay, like China, will be at a disadvantage.
Moore expressed his admiration for Trump’s negotiation tactics, calling it “a game of musical chairs” where countries need to act fast to avoid being left out.
Despite his usual support for free trade, Moore said he could see how Trump’s approach might reshape the global economy for the better, even if most economists disagree. “If Trump can pull this off and get countries to reduce their tariffs, it’s good for everybody,” Moore said. “The world economy will be better.”
He then went further, quoting a column he wrote where he suggested that Trump’s tariff strategy might even lead to a Nobel Peace Prize. “If this keeps up… he might win a Nobel Peace Prize if he’s able to pull this off,” Moore exclaimed.
Roberts responded, “Is there a Nobel Prize in trade? I don’t know, but maybe he might be up for that one.”
