Every Republican suddenly claims they ‘talked to Mitch McConnell for 20 minutes’—and the internet isn’t buying it

The internet has officially found its newest running joke, and it revolves around one oddly specific claim that seemingly every Republican in Washington is making.

Apparently, everyone has talked to Sen. Mitch McConnell for exactly “20 minutes”.

As the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican remains hospitalized with an undisclosed medical condition, a growing list of GOP lawmakers and allies have gone public describing lengthy phone conversations with the longtime senator. The problem? The Senate still isn’t saying much about why McConnell has been in the hospital for weeks, leaving social media users to connect the dots—and crack plenty of jokes.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune reportedly spoke with McConnell on July 6, describing the conversation as “long and substantive” and saying the two discussed national security and other Senate business.

The next day, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso said he spoke with McConnell for roughly 20 minutes, covering everything from upcoming Senate work to the latest Supreme Court developments and the Maine Senate race.

Then longtime McConnell adviser and CNN commentator Scott Jennings chimed in.

According to Jennings, he also spoke with McConnell for just shy of 20 minutes, discussing Iran, Ukraine, Senate politics, and even a little history.

That’s when the internet noticed a pattern.

Almost overnight, social media filled with sarcastic posts pretending that everyone in America had their own 20-minute phone call with McConnell.

“Am I the only one who hasn’t spoken to Mitch McConnell for 20 minutes today?” one user joked on X.

Another wrote, “It’s crazy that we all spoke to McConnell for 20 minutes this morning. Where does he find the time to schedule all of these 20-minute time slots?”

“Can somebody patch me into one of their 20-minute phone calls with Mitch McConnell? I keep getting a busy signal. Apparently everybody in Washington has his direct number except the taxpayers footing the bill,” another person wrote.

Even public figures joined in.

“I spoke to McConnell for about 20 minutes this morning. He said we should end the war with Iran, quit giving aid to Israel, stop spying on Americans without a warrant, and he’s really sorry about how my primary turned out,” Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie wrote on X.

Massie also joked that McConnell called him to apologize for his primary and endorse positions the Kentucky senator has never actually supported.

Television host Andy Cohen claimed McConnell phoned him to discuss the latest season of The Real Housewives of Orange County, naturally, for 20 minutes.

Actress Lisa Rinna piled on by joking that McConnell called to ask whether her lips were real.

The memes may be funny, but they’re also being fueled by a serious question: if McConnell is healthy enough to hold multiple lengthy conversations about Senate business and world affairs, why is there still so little information about why he’s been hospitalized since June 14?

McConnell’s office has revealed almost nothing beyond saying he “continues to improve” and is working with his staff while recovering.

That lack of transparency has only intensified speculation.

Emergency dispatch audio from June 14 reportedly included calls involving an unconscious person and another reporting cardiac arrest at an address associated with McConnell’s longtime Washington residence. His office has neither confirmed nor denied whether those emergency calls involved the senator.

Instead, aides have repeatedly issued the same brief statement saying McConnell appreciates the support he’s received and looks forward to returning to work.

Until more information is released, one thing seems certain.

Whether they’re senators, television personalities, or random people on social media, everyone suddenly seems to have the exact same story:

They talked to Mitch McConnell… for about 20 minutes.
