With the election being just one week away, tens of millions of Americans have already cast their votes and a new report shows that Democrats are ahead in 16 of 19 states that have reported their data.

According to The Washington Post, weeks of early mail-in voting has resulted in an estimated 69 million Americans having already cast their ballots. The results show that Democrats are up in 16 of 19 states that report partisan data.

“The early vote is showing two things: We’re clearly headed to record-level turnout, nationally and likely in just about every state,” said Tom Bonier, the head of TargetSmart, a Democratic data firm. “And it’s clearly showing us that Democrats are highly engaged and will be themselves setting record levels of turnout.”

But are the early voters Democrats or Republicans?

“The open question is whether that level of Republican engagement and enthusiasm can match or exceed [that of] Democrats,” Boner said. “That’s the part of the equation that we can’t solve until Election Day.”

So far, the early voter ballots already counted equates to roughly half of the total turnout in 2016. Should this trend continue throughout the weekend, the majority of ballots will be cast before Election Day for the first time in American history.
