Jimmy Swaggart, the controversial Louisiana televangelist known for his massive ministry and public scandals, has died at 90. He had been in critical condition after suffering a heart attack on June 14.

Swaggart’s spokesperson Megan Kelly announced his death Tuesday, saying, “Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ. Today was the day he has sung about for decades. He met his beloved Savior and entered the portals of glory. At the same time, we rejoice knowing that we will see him again one day.”

Once one of the biggest names in televangelism, Swaggart’s ministry reached millions. He began his TV ministry in 1975, and by 1983, his show was broadcast on more than 250 stations. He built a ministry worth millions, started a Bible college, wrote about 50 Christian books, and even earned a Grammy nomination for his music.

But Swaggart’s rise was overshadowed by scandal. In 1988, he was caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans. The scandal destroyed his reputation and led to his removal from the Assemblies of God denomination. Swaggart later became non-denominational but lost a large part of his following.

In a tearful 1988 sermon, he admitted, “I have sinned against you. I beg you to forgive me,” though he never directly mentioned the prostitute scandal.

His troubles didn’t end there. In 1991, Swaggart was caught again with a prostitute and also faced charges for reckless driving.

Despite his fall from grace, Swaggart remained a well-known figure in Pentecostal circles until his death.
