In Huron, Ohio, a bank robber was apprehended by the police after attempting to escape through the bank’s drive-thru ceiling shaft and falling straight into a trash bin.
Early Wednesday morning, the Huron Police responded to a bank alarm at the VacationLand Federal Credit Union on University Drive East. As they approached the drive-thru, they heard noises coming from the roof area. Suspiciously, a blue recycling bin was positioned below a roof access door in the drive-thru lane.
Body camera footage captured the dramatic moment when a suspect dressed in black dropped a backpack containing construction tools from the open access door. With their weapons drawn, the officers waited for the suspect to attempt to exit. The suspect fell straight into the recycling bin, where he was handcuffed and taken into custody without resistance.
The suspect was identified as 27-year-old Tristan Heidl, a resident of Huron, Ohio. He did not sustain any injuries during the fall. Heidl admitted to using the recycling bin as a means to climb up and access the bank’s ceiling. He cooperated with the officers, stating that he was financially desperate.
Heidl now faces serious charges, including breaking and entering, possession of criminal tools, and safecracking, under Ohio law. He could face more than three years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
Currently, Heidl is being held at the Erie County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
