GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger, of Illinois, tore into Sen. Josh Hawley, calling the Missouri Republican “a self-aggrandizing con artist,” and “one of the worst human beings” for demanding that President Biden abandon support for Ukraine to join NATO.
According to Axios, Hawley sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and copied to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin saying that Biden should not support Ukraine because “the United States can no longer carry the heavy burden it once did in other regions of the world — including Europe,” arguing that “we must do less in those secondary theaters in order to prioritize denying China’s hegemonic ambitions in the Indo-Pacific.”
Kinzinger responded on Twitter writing: “I hate to be so personal, but Hawley is one of the worst human beings, and a self-aggrandizing con artist. When Trump goes down I certainly hope this evil will be layed in the open for all to see, and be ashamed of.”
When asked about Hawley’s demands, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that Hawley was “parroting Russian talking points”, and is not aligned with long-standing bipartisan American values.
Russia has stationed more than 100,000 troops along the border with Ukraine, and the U.S. has warned of a possible invasion. Russia has continued to demand that Ukraine not be allowed into NATO’s military alliance.
