Donald Trump is once again attacking the integrity of American elections — this time less than a month before voters head to the polls for the midterm elections.
In a late-night Truth Social rant Sunday, Trump declared that “Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!” while complaining that some U.S. election results take longer to count than results in other countries.
Trump was reacting to Brazil’s presidential election, where incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of Trump ally Jair Bolsonaro, advanced to a runoff after neither candidate won a majority.
“125 Million People voted today in the first round of Brazil’s Presidential Election,” Trump wrote, before complaining that the results came out the same day.
“In Detroit, Philadelphia, California, and numerous other U.S. Cities and States, the results, with much smaller numbers, will often take weeks to Rig, I mean, calculate,” Trump wrote. “Voting in America is CORRUPT!!!”
There was no evidence offered to support the claim that American elections are being “rigged” while votes are being counted.
AThe 2026 midterms are less than a month away, and Trump has increasingly portrayed the elections as a referendum on himself. On Sunday, he posted that “I AM ON THE BALLOT!” while claiming polls have “ALWAYS underestimated MAGA” and accusing pollsters of trying to “suppress the Vote.”
That came just hours before his attack on the American voting system.
Trump has also repeatedly promoted a proposed $5,000 “Trump dividend” for every adult American if Republicans retain control of Congress. The proposal could cost more than $1 trillion and would require congressional action. Trump has nonetheless continued to promote it as Republicans fight to hold onto the House and Senate.
The president’s election rhetoric comes as Republicans face a difficult political environment heading into November.
Trump’s approval rating has fallen to about 32%, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, while Democrats have been showing strength in a number of competitive races. Polling is not a prediction of the final result, but the current numbers have clearly given Republicans reason for concern.
And Trump appears to know it.
His Sunday posts weren’t simply about counting votes. He complained about polls, insisted that he personally was “on the ballot,” and then attacked the legitimacy of the American voting system itself.
This is hardly a new argument from Trump.
He has spent years claiming that his 2020 defeat was the result of widespread election fraud, despite failing to establish that claim in court. His own Justice Department’s investigation later concluded that there was no outcome-determinative fraud, while a joint Justice Department and Homeland Security assessment found no evidence that a foreign government manipulated the 2020 election results.
Yet the claims keep coming.
Because if Republicans lose control of Congress in November, Trump will have plenty of political explanations available to him.
And his latest posts are already laying the groundwork for one of them: the claim that the election itself cannot be trusted.
