JD Vance is getting dragged online after warning that gas prices will “skyrocket” if Democrats win back Congress in November. Critics quickly fired back that energy prices are already painfully high, and Republicans are the ones in charge.
Vance also warned that Democrats would unleash a flood of congressional investigations if they take back Congress, portraying that as a distraction from actually getting things done for Americans.
Naturally, the internet had a field day.
“If the Democrats win, here’s what’s going to happen,” Vance said in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. “Congressional investigations as far as the eye can see, not good policy-making for the American people.”
Then he turned to energy prices.
“You’re gonna have American energy prices skyrocket because they will go to war against American coal, oil and natural gas,” Vance said.
That prediction quickly drew a wave of sarcastic responses online.
“Because they are not skyrocketing already, right?” one commenter wrote.
Another asked the obvious question: “Are American energy prices not skyrocketing now?”
And critics weren’t buying Vance’s complaint about congressional investigations, either.
One commenter argued that investigations are exactly what Congress is supposed to conduct when there are allegations of wrongdoing, corruption or abuse of power.
“When you’re committing crimes, corruption, & self-dealing as far as the eye can see, you SHOULD BE UP TO YOUR EYEBALLS IN INVESTIGATIONS,” the commenter wrote.
The same commenter pushed back on Vance’s claim that clean-energy policies amount to a “war” against oil and gas, arguing that reducing dependence on fossil fuels can also reduce exposure to energy-price volatility.
Another commenter offered a more optimistic prediction about what could happen if Democrats take control:
“No, we will end the war and prices will come down. And yes, we will have investigations, but we can walk and chew gum at the same time.”
Meanwhile, fuel prices remain elevated as the war between the United States and Iran continues to disrupt global energy markets.
Brent crude was hovering around $102 a barrel Friday, while gasoline and diesel prices remained substantially higher than they were a year earlier.
That made Vance’s warning about Democrats causing energy prices to “skyrocket” particularly easy for critics to mock.
“Um, dumbass… We are already in the IRAN WAR AND PRICES FOR GAS ARE RECORD HIGH!!!” another commenter wrote.
“YOU DID THIS!!! YOU MADE THIS HAPPEN!!! DEMOCRATS HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!”
Another commenter pointed to the contrast with fuel prices when the Biden administration left office:
“Gas was $3.10 when Biden handed over the keys to these assholes.”
The criticism gets at the central irony in Vance’s argument.
He is warning voters that Democrats could drive up energy prices and launch congressional investigations if they win back Congress. But Republicans currently control the federal government, while Americans are already dealing with elevated fuel costs and an ongoing war that has disrupted energy markets.
So his warning sound less like a prediction of what might happen under Democrats and more like a description of problems already confronting Americans.
