CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly traveled to Russia aboard a U.S. military transport plane Tuesday for meetings in Moscow, adding another layer of intrigue to already stalled efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
CBS News reported that Ratcliffe flew to Russia on a C-17 aircraft, a U.S. military transport plane capable of carrying troops, equipment and supplies.
Earlier Tuesday, a U.S. military transport aircraft was spotted landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport.
Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed a Boeing C-17 with a U.S. tail number traveling to Moscow from Latvia.
The Kremlin, however, reportedly said it had no information about the aircraft.
That hasn’t exactly cleared things up.
Ratcliffe’s reported trip comes as the Trump administration’s efforts to broker an end to Russia’s war in Ukraine appear to have stalled, with little obvious progress emerging from the U.S.-led negotiations.
President Donald Trump has leaned heavily on negotiations involving his administration, with his son-in-law Jared Kushner playing a role in the diplomatic efforts.
Meanwhile, the war continues.
Russia and Ukraine have escalated their drone attacks as the conflict enters its fourth year, with Moscow carrying out deadly strikes against Ukrainian targets.
A Russian attack on a shopping center Friday reportedly killed more than a dozen people and wounded at least 130 others.
So while Washington continues talking about peace, the violence on the ground isn’t exactly cooperating.
Ratcliffe’s reported trip is particularly noteworthy because CIA directors don’t typically show up in Moscow aboard U.S. military aircraft without attracting attention.
And the timing is hard to ignore.
On Monday, European leaders traveled to Kyiv to stand alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as Ukraine celebrated its Independence Day.
The symbolism was impossible to miss. Ukraine is fighting to preserve its independence from the very country that invaded it, while American officials are simultaneously attempting to negotiate an end to the war with Moscow.
One of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s central objectives in launching the invasion was to pull Ukraine back into Moscow’s sphere of influence.
Four years later, that war is still raging—and now the head of the CIA is reportedly traveling to Moscow for mystery meetings as Trump’s peace push struggles to gain traction.
What exactly Ratcliffe is discussing with Russian officials remains unclear.
But the fact that a U.S. military plane landed in Moscow with the CIA director reportedly aboard is enough to raise some serious questions.
