In what’s rapidly becoming the weirdest promotional tour for a propaganda project, Donald Trump admitted this weekend that he’s been hyping his wife’s big documentary — one Amazon reportedly shelled out $40 million for — without ever actually watching it.
During a press gaggle aboard Air Force One, Trump acknowledged he’d only seen “pieces” of the movie centered on First Lady Melania Trump, set to hit theaters and then Amazon Prime on January 30, 2026.
Under normal circumstances, a spouse casually not watching their partner’s vanity project might be a private matter. But there’s nothing normal about this — Trump enthusiastically touted the film as “incredible… very good,” and insisted it will do very well with audiences. He even invoked Melania’s 2024 memoir’s bestseller status (which he claimed was a “big No. 1”) as proof the movie would crush it.
“It’s incredible,” Trump said, before predicting box-office success by leaning on past bragging rights. “I tell you, I think it’s going to do very well. She did a book and the book was a big No. 1 bestseller and this is a movie and, uh, it seems to be captivating a lot of people’s attention. It’s, uh, very good.”
He then pivoted into full hype-man mode, insisting demand for the premiere is through the roof. “It’s a very hot ticket, I tell you,” Trump declared, abruptly dragging hockey legend Wayne Gretzky into the pitch.
“Wayne Gretzky and his wife Janet, beautiful wife, great wife. They said last night, ‘Gee, I want to go to…’ A lot of… everybody wants tickets to the premiere. I think it’s going to be great.”
Ever the self-promoter, also announced the premiere will take place at the “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center,” which he said is “very exciting,” before pivoting to a name-drop of Wayne Gretzky and his wife — apparently to signal the event is must-attend.
Let’s unpack that: Trump is previewing a film about Melania — that he hasn’t fully seen — as if it’s the next Godfather, hosted at a venue renamed after himself, and promoted by appeal to hockey nostalgia. That reads less like media strategy and more like the fever dream of someone with too many titles and too little self-awareness.
The film’s controversial director, Brett Ratner — accused of sexual misconduct years ago — only amplifies the bizarre optics, though Trump and his allies remain bullish. Critics have even speculated that Amazon’s investment is less art and more political cozying.

Reporter: Have you seen the Melania movie yet?
Trump: I’ve seen pieces of it. It’s incredible. It’s going to be doing the premier at The Trump Kennedy Center. It’s a very hard ticket. Everybody—Wayne Gretzky and his wife…everybody wants tickets. pic.twitter.com/4B2Hxpm43P
