President Donald Trump went on a fiery tirade Tuesday during a White House cabinet meeting, taking aim at the word “affordability” and labeling it a “Democrat scam.”
“The word ‘affordability’ is a Democrat scam!” Trump declared. “They say it and then they go into the next subject, and everyone thinks ‘oh, they have lower prices’ – no, they had the worst inflation in the history of our country!”
Trump’s attack comes after Democratic candidates leaned heavily on affordability messaging in recent elections in Virginia and New Jersey. The strategy appeared to work: Democrats won both contests by historic margins, signaling that voters are paying attention to issues around the cost of living.
Since those elections, Trump has incorporated the word “affordability” into his own messaging—but his remarks Tuesday made it clear he isn’t shy about mocking it.
“There’s this fake narrative that the Democrats talk about, ‘affordability,’ they just say the word, it doesn’t mean anything to anybody!” he fumed.
Trump didn’t stop there. He singled out a Democratic lawmaker—presumably Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), whom he has repeatedly called “low IQ”—for repeatedly using the word.
“The word ‘affordability’ is a con job by the Democrats!” Trump continued. “I watched the other day where some very low-IQ congresswoman talked about ‘affordability, affordability, affordability;’ she had no idea!”
