Donald Trump appeared to drift into sleep during a White House event that already felt surreal — Dr. Mehmet Oz, now the head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, was speaking about the health risks of obesity and dementia when the president seemed to nod off at his desk.
The moment exploded online, with many pointing out the irony of Dr. Oz discussing dementia while Trump looked half-asleep just a few feet away.
Mike Nellis, a senior organizer for Kamala Harris’ campaign, tweeted, “Dr. Oz linking obesity to dementia while Trump’s slumped over at his desk is absolutely a choice.” Others piled on with memes and comments like “Self awareness level -348” and “Hey Dr. Oz have you checked out your Big Mac boss recently?” One user summed it up bluntly: “This is a perfect metaphor for the government.”
The event was meant to announce a new deal between the Trump administration and pharmaceutical companies Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to “expand coverage and reduce prices” for popular weight-loss drugs Zepbound and Wegovy. During the announcement, Oz said, “Knees don’t hurt, people don’t have heart attacks, renal failure, dementia. All the things we know are associated with obesity and much more.”
That’s when cameras caught Trump leaning back, eyes closed, seemingly tuning out.
The viral clip only added to recent speculation about Trump’s cognitive health, which has been under scrutiny after a string of odd moments during interviews and public appearances. On 60 Minutes, Trump appeared confused when asked about his pardon of Changpeng Zhao, the co-founder of Binance, saying, “Okay are you ready? I don’t know who he is.” He added, “I know he got a four-month sentence or something like that and I heard it was a Biden witch hunt.”
MSNBC’s Jen Psaki didn’t hold back when she tackled the incident on her MSNBC show The Briefing. Opening her segment with her trademark mix of wit and disbelief, Psaki tore into the bizarre scene.
“All right. So, it has been just 48 hours since Republicans suffered pretty humiliating, crushing defeats in elections literally all across the country,” she began. “And when any White House experiences a humiliating defeat — and believe me, I’ve been part of those — the instinct is often to change the subject… basically to get people to talk about anything other than the absolute shellacking that you just took at the polls.”
“But apparently, the announcement this White House settled on today didn’t even really seem to keep the president of the United States awake.”
Psaki replayed the clip, adding, “I don’t know if you just saw Donald Trump, like on the side of the screen there. We maybe should have done like a big red circle or something there. But I’m sure you saw it. I mean, that was him in the White House today, basically appearing to nod off while his surgeon general talked about, of all things, really, dementia, obesity and sleep loss. I mean, it kind of feels a little too on the nose, doesn’t it?”
She also took aim at Oz’s math, joking, “Look, I’m not an expert on weight loss. I’m not even a mathematician. But I do know there are about 340 million people in the United States. So, for this country to collectively lose 135 billion pounds, that would mean that every American would have to lose an average of 397 pounds each. And that would be big news because it’s basically impossible.”
Then Psaki played the clip of the man collapsing beside Trump. “Now, that kind of thing does happen at White House events from time to time,” she acknowledged. “But what was notable this time was how the president just kind of awkwardly stood there, stared at him as after it happened, that’s what he did kind of the whole time. I mean, did he understand what had happened? Did he not care? Was he happy to just stand by as things were literally collapsing around him?”
Her final line hit hardest: “The metaphors are kind of too long to list here, but that event gave us a lot to work with. But that is definitely how Trump appears to be coping with this week’s election losses — just sort of spacing out as his party collapses. And to be fair, I mean, everyone is coping, I guess, in their own way.”
Between Trump’s apparent nap, Dr. Oz’s lecture on dementia, and the literal collapse in the Oval Office, Psaki wasn’t exaggerating — the metaphors wrote themselves.
