Donald Trump went scorched-earth on Saturday, blasting the FBI and his own former appointee, Director Christopher Wray, over what he called the “January 6th hoax.” Still fixated on claims of deep-state conspiracies, the president accused the Bureau of planting hundreds of agents within the crowd that stormed the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
“It was just revealed that the FBI had secretly placed, against all Rules, Regulations, Protocols, and Standards, 274 FBI Agents into the Crowd just prior to, and during, the January 6th Hoax,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“This is different from what [FBI] Director Christopher Wray stated, over and over again! That’s right, as it now turns out, FBI Agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘Law Enforcement Officials.’”
Trump was apparently referencing recent reports suggesting that FBI personnel were present on the ground during the Capitol riot. Those reports, however, clarified that agents were not “embedded” among the rioters as undercover participants but were instead part of the law enforcement response once the crowd breached the building.
That distinction didn’t seem to matter to Trump, who went on to call Wray a liar and vowed to expose what he portrayed as a massive internal cover-up. “I want to know who each and every one of these so-called ‘Agents’ are, and what they were up to on that now ‘Historic’ Day,” he wrote.
“Many Great American Patriots were made to pay a very big price only for the love their Country. I owe this investigation of ‘Dirty Cops and Crooked Politicians’ to them!” Trump said.
The president drew a direct comparison to former FBI Director James Comey, who was recently indicted after Trump publicly pushed for accountability against him.
“Christopher Wray, the then Director of the FBI, has some major explaining to do,” Trump continued. “That’s two in a row, Comey and Wray, who got caught LYING, with our Great Country at stake. WE CAN NEVER LET THIS HAPPEN TO AMERICA AGAIN!”
