A former Republican lawmaker has notified the director of national intelligence after a post shared by Donald Trump sparked a firestorm online, with many accusing the president of indirectly threatening Supreme Court justices who ruled against him.
The controversy erupted over the weekend when Trump reposted a message from Mike Davis, a former GOP staffer, who suggested a retaliatory plan against the justices who didn’t side with Trump. In the post, Davis wrote, “The Supreme Court still has an illegal injunction on the President of the United States, preventing him from commanding military operations to expel these foreign terrorists.” He then proposed housing these so-called “terrorists” near the Chevy Chase Country Club, a location tied to several Supreme Court justices, including Chief Justice John Roberts.
The suggestion immediately raised alarms, especially given the club’s connection to Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Democratic influencer Harry Sisson was quick to call out Trump, saying, “Trump is now threatening Supreme Court justices who ruled against him.” Sisson also noted the dangerous implications of the post, labeling it as “absolutely unhinged.”
As the backlash grew, conservative commentator Tim Miller highlighted the double standard in the reactions, pointing out that while right-wing commentators had condemned threats against SCOTUS justices after the Roe v. Wade decision, the response to Trump’s remarks was far more subdued.
“Here’s the president of the United States threatening SCOTUS justices,” Miller said, adding, “Will see if anyone even criticizes him for it on Fox. Not holding my breath.”
Jon Favreau, former speechwriter for President Obama, also condemned the post, directly addressing Davis: “I think any threats to Supreme Court justices are wrong and dangerous – whether they come from the left or come from you, like in the post where you suggested releasing ‘terrorists’ where Justices Roberts and Kavanaugh live. Despicable.”
However, former GOP lawmaker Barbara Comstock was the first to take immediate action in response to the controversy. Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, she alerted the Director of National Intelligence, writing, “Just noting for [Tulsi Gabbard] in case she’s concerned.”
