Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett recently went viral for a facial expression that some viewers interpreted as showing disdain toward President Donald Trump after his speech to Congress. The video, which has more than 2.8 million views, shows Barrett at the event with Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Elena Kagan and Brett Kavanaugh. This was Trump’s first address to Congress since starting his second term.
As Trump walked past the justices, several posts on X (formerly Twitter) focused on Barrett’s facial reaction. One user posted the video with the comment, “Maybe Amy Coney Barrett does have a soul.” Another user added, “Trump may have appointed Amy Coney Barrett, but she looks like she couldn’t despise him more in this clip.”
Some joked about the moment, with one user, Daniel B., commenting, “Or she caught a whiff of the diaper?”
However, the most intense reactions came from Trump’s supporters, who criticized Barrett harshly. Right-wing figures like Laura Loomer accused Barrett of being a “DEI hire,” while others felt betrayed. One Trump supporter wrote, “He gave her a forever job, and she stabbed him in the back… and Americans.”
Another user called her “a bad SCOTUS nominee,” and commentator Jason Hahn labeled her “The biggest mistake none of us saw coming.” One more person even said, “She got paid off. Sold her soul.”
Barrett’s nomination in 2020 was controversial. After the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Senate Republicans allowed Trump to appoint Barrett just 38 days before the 2020 election, even though they had refused to let former President Barack Obama make a similar appointment in 2016, arguing that it was too close to the election.
