In an op-ed published Friday, the editorial board of the New York Post slammed former President Donald Trump as an “egotistic narcissist” who is “unworthy for the office” and accused him of clinging to fantastical delusions and refusing to accept the reality that he lost the 2020 election. The board then called on Republicans to “move on” and leave Trump in the past, where he belongs.
The conservative paper’s board, which previously endorsed Trump in 2020, said “It’s time for Republicans to move on.”
“Reports that Trump was pleased that the Jan. 6 crowd chanted for Vice President Mike Pence to be hanged — a truly reprehensible sentiment — makes him unworthy for the office, Trump can’t look past 2020. Let him remain there.
The board also said that the House investigation into the Jan. 6 insurrection and its hearings are a vailed “campaign ad” for Democrats, and said they refuse to move on.
The blistering op-ed comes after the House select committee investigating the events of Jan. 6 held its first public hearing during prime time on Thursday, providing evidence that Trump was at the center of a plot to remain in power after losing to President Biden in 2020.
During the hearing, the Jan 6 panel aired clips of testimony from those close to the former president, including his daughter Ivanka Trump and former Attorney General Bill Barr.
In response, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to attack Bill Barr as a coward and dismissed Ivanka as “checked out” after the 2020 election.
“Donald Trump has become a prisoner of his own ego. He can’t admit his tweeting and narcissism turned off millions. He won’t stop insisting that 2020 was ‘stolen’ even though he’s offered no proof that it’s true,” the Post’s editorial board said. “He insults Barr, and dismisses Ivanka as ‘checked out.’ He clings to more fantastical theories, such as Dinesh D’Souza’s debunked ‘2,000 Mules,’ even as recounts in Arizona, Georgia and Wisconsin confirm Trump lost.”
The New York Post Post editorial board concluded by saying that “we need a fresh start.”
“Unsubscribe from Trump’s daily emails begging for money. Then pick your favorite from a new crop of conservatives. Look to 2022, and 2024, and a new era,” the editorial board wrote. “Let’s make America sane again.”
