Concerns are being raised after it was reported on Wednesday that State Department acting Inspector General Stephen Akard was leaving his positions just months after the Trump administration ousted his predecessor.

Chris Lu, who held multiple positions in the Obama administration including White House cabinet secretary, reacted to the news by saying, “This doesn’t smell right.”

As Lu notes, “Acting State Dept IG resigns less than three months after his predecessor was fired. All of this is happening while the IG office is investigating Pompeo and his wife.”

CNN reports that “it is unclear why Akard is resigning. The email from Akard’s deputy, Diana Shaw, said that he would be returning to Indiana.”
