Donald Trump has long bragged about his sharp mind. But when asked Friday about a cognitive test he often cites, he couldn’t remember much about it—except that he “got all the answers right.”
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after his annual physical, the former president brushed off the question with a vague answer. “It’s a pretty well known test. Whatever it is. I got every one right,” Trump said.
He explained he took the test to set himself apart from President Joe Biden, saying, “I wanted to be a little different than Biden,” referencing ongoing scrutiny of Biden’s mental fitness.
On his overall health, Trump said, “I felt I was in very good shape. Good heart. A good soul. Very good soul.”
The exam was conducted by Navy Captain Sean Barbabella. The full report is expected to be released Sunday.
Trump left the medical center and flew straight to Florida, boarding Air Force One shortly after his visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Trump’s confidence in his cognitive skills has been a staple of his public persona. On the campaign trail in Iowa last year, he told supporters, “I took a physical and I passed with flying colors.” He added, “And I took a cognitive exam. I said ‘Doctor, give me anything you want, I want to take it.’”
He also claimed candidates for president should be “forced to take” such exams and said Biden wouldn’t be able to keep up.
Trump famously went viral in 2020 for repeating words from that year’s test: “Person. Woman. Man. Camera. TV.”
Friday’s physical is the first full health update from Trump since he began his second presidential run. After surviving an assassination attempt last July, he declined to release medical records, instead opting for a brief note from Rep. Ronny Jackson, a former White House doctor, describing the gunshot wound.
During the campaign, Trump released a glowing letter from Dr. Bruce A. Aronwald, calling his health “excellent”—but the letter didn’t include key data like weight, blood pressure, or cholesterol.
Now, with another election on the horizon and Trump continuing to tout his mental strength, even he appears fuzzy on the test he says proves it.
