Donald Trump will do just about anything if it meant avoiding defeat against former Vice President Joe Biden, according to sources close to the president.

According to Politico, one Republican strategist says it’s stunning how many Trump associates believe that the president would drop out of the race just to avoid the public humiliation of defeat.

“He doesn’t want to be a loser, and that’s all in jeopardy now,” the strategist said. “It’s less than 50-50, but I’m amazed at the amount of New Yorkers that are talking about this — his former friends. … They think he’s looking for an excuse to get out.”

According to one former Trump associate, who still keeps in contact with the president, Trump would be willing to throw Vice President Mike Pence into the wolves if it meant he would win in November.

“He would throw Mike Pence in a wood chipper if he needed to,” said the former White House official. “I’m still very surprised that he’s on the ticket. If someone walks in there and tells him, ‘The only way you’re going to pull this out is to put an African American on the ticket or to put a woman on the ticket’ — if it’s good for Trump, he’ll do it in a second.”
