The Trump administration is facing a wave of online mockery after a man was hit with a felony charge for throwing a Subway sandwich at a federal officer in Washington, D.C.

The man, identified as Sean Dunn, was caught on video yelling at a Border Patrol agent before launching a sandwich into the agent’s chest. The incident happened late Sunday night on 14th Street NW, while the officer was patrolling the area with Metro Transit Police and other federal agents.

According to a police report, Dunn got within inches of the officer’s face and shouted, “F— you! You f—ing fascists! Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!” A short time later, he crossed the street and threw the sandwich at the same officer.

After trying to flee, Dunn was arrested. Authorities say he confessed during processing: “I did it. I threw the sandwich.”

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced the felony charge in a video posted to X on Wednesday.

“So President Trump has vowed to make D.C. safe and beautiful again,” Pirro said. “And the president’s message to the criminals was, if you spit, we hit.”

She continued: “Well, we didn’t quite do that the other night when an individual went up to one of the federal law enforcement officers and started jumping up and down, screaming at him, berating him, yelling at him, and then he took a Subway sandwich about this big and took it and threw it at the officer. He thought it was funny. Well, he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony, assault on a police officer.”

Pirro ended her video with: “So there, stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else!”

The charge sparked a storm of ridicule across social media, with critics calling it over-the-top and emblematic of the Trump administration’s aggressive approach to even minor disruptions.

Columnist Will Bunch joked, “The sandwich was also processed.”

Retired teacher Dennis Croskey quipped, “My God! There was a submarine attack on Washington, D.C?”

Feminist writer Laura Chapin added, “Absolutely nothing illustrates the performative bulls— comedy of Trump’s assault on DC like charging a guy for throwing a sandwich. May the ridicule be eternal.”

Congressional candidate Alex Hardy didn’t hold back: “Border Patrol is acting like the sandwich had immigrants hiding in the mayonnaise. Was it a footlong? He probably felt emasculated by its overwhelming girth. Cowards.”

Journalist Radley Balko posted, “The man should never have to pay for another sandwich.”

Criminal defense attorney Ken White changed his handle to I Did It I Threw The Sandwich Hat, and posted: “I THREW THE SANDWICH But I did not throw the panini.”

Even MSNBC legal analyst Kristy Greenberg chimed in: “You know DC crime’s bad — the U.S. Attorney made a video when a guy threw a Subway sandwich at a cop. Call the National Guard — that sandwich had some mustard on it.”

For now, the man is facing a serious charge over what many see as a ridiculous moment — and the Trump administration is again being dragged into the spotlight, not for law and order, but for a sandwich.
