A video of the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ) warning that Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is “working for Russian President Vladimir Putin” has resurfaced online and is getting a lot of attention after Paul single-handedly blocked a vote on a new aid package to Ukraine on Thursday.
In the C-SPAN video from 2017, McCain was discussing NATO membership for the Balkan nation of Montenegro. During his remarks, he slammed Paul for blocking a vote to ratify a treaty that would have allowed Montenegro to become a NATO member by refusing to agree to unanimous consent.
“He has no argument to be made. He has no justification for his objection to having a small nation be part of NATO, that is under assault from the Russians,” the late senator said. “So I repeat again – the senator from Kentucky is now working for Vladimir Putin,” McCain declared.
The Senate went on to ratify the treaty by a vote of 98 to 2, with Paul and Republican Senator Mike Lee voting against it.
John McCain passed away in 2018.

We can thank Russian asset @RandPaul for halting the aid to Ukraine brought during today’s senate vote.
We can also thank John McCain for letting us know at the beginning that @RandPaul works for Putin. pic.twitter.com/SrkpunDT2C
