Her alleged distaste for Trump dates back to his election in 2016 and became particularly evident after his supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the election results, as reported by The Washington Post.
A close friend, speaking anonymously, shared that she found Trump’s conduct deeply disturbing and expressed broader disillusionment with his presidency from its outset.
The friend recalled, “Usha found Trump’s involvement in the Capitol breach to be deeply disturbing. She had been generally appalled by Trump since his initial election.”

Friends described the sight of Usha Vance sitting next to Trump and speaking at the Republican National Convention as “surreal,” particularly given her earlier sentiments about the former president.

Usha Vance’s shift from private criticism of Trump to active involvement in her husband’s campaign represents a significant evolution in her political stance. Some acquaintances from her Yale days expressed surprise at her apparent support for her husband’s political endeavors, especially in light of her previous leanings.
“Was I surprised to see her there to support a man who seems to be building political power by punching down at trans folks and immigrants? Yeah, that part caught me off guard,” a Yale classmate remarked to The Washington Post.
Her shift in perspective on Trump mirrors that of JD Vance, who had previously compared Trump to “Hitler.” Before JD’s political rise in 2022, Usha Vance had been registered as a Democrat and worked for two conservative judges, but she has since aligned more closely with her husband’s political trajectory.
In a statement provided by JD Vance’s campaign strategist, Jai Chabria, it was emphasized that Usha Vance now fully supports Donald Trump and her husband’s political ambitions, stating, “Usha has had a similar shift in views and fully supports Donald Trump and her husband and will do whatever she can to ensure their victory this November.”
