Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard (Hawaii), who left the Democratic Party in 2022, announced Monday she was endorsing former President Donald Trump for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Her support for Trump has long been an open secret, reflecting her longstanding alignment with right-wing positions despite her previous Democratic affiliation.
Gabbard, a frequent figure in conservative media circles, revealed her endorsement during a National Guard Association event in Michigan, where Trump was also present. In her speech, she criticized the current administration’s foreign policy, stating, “This administration has us facing multiple wars on multiple fronts and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we have ever been before. This is one of the main reasons why I am committed to doing all that I can to send President Trump back to the White House, where he can once again serve us as our commander-in-chief.”
Despite running an unsuccessful campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, Gabbard’s political trajectory has increasingly aligned with Republican principles. After ending her congressional tenure, leaving the Democratic Party, and participating in conservative events like the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), her shift towards Trump has seemed like a natural progression.
Gabbard’s notable clash with Kamala Harris during the 2020 Democratic debates, where she sharply criticized Harris’s prosecutorial record, foreshadowed her eventual alignment with conservative politics. Recently, she has been actively preparing with Trump for the upcoming debate against Vice President Harris, further cementing her place in the Republican camp.
Her endorsement of Trump follows closely on the heels of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s decision to suspend his independent presidential campaign and endorse Trump—a move that has been highlighted by Trump’s campaign as a significant boost in key battleground states.
