Earlier this month, National Archives agents descended into Donald Trump’s Mar-A-Lag residency in Florida and recovered more than a dozen boxes containing White House documents that the former president had illegally taken with him after losing the 2020 election. A week later, the archivist notified Congress that classified documents were among the documents recovered from Trump’s house. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
According to The New York Times, the Archivist has reported that Trump may have destroyed a batch of classified documents.
In a letter sent to the National Archives on Friday, House investigators said they want to know more about the contents of the classified documents Trump took to Mar-a-Lago. They specifically inquired about the level of classification the documents were and which documents Trump was able to destroy, The Times reported.
The committee wants Trump’s communications pertaining to record-keeping and the Presidential Records Act along with results of federal investigations into the documents, according to the newspaper.
“The American people deserve to know the extent of what former President Trump did to hide and destroy federal records and make sure these abuses do not happen again,” Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), who chairs the committee, said.

Documents “relating to White House employees or contractors finding paper in a toilet in the White House, including the White House residence” are also being sought by the panel, The Times noted.
Trump has denied any wrongdoing in his handling of classified documents.
