Trump Threatens to Oust GOP Senator for Rejecting His Bill

President Donald Trump is going after Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.)—hard—after Tillis voted against Trump’s massive legislative package on Saturday.

Trump took to Truth Social to blast the senator, calling him a “talker and complainer” who “hurt the great people of North Carolina.”

“Thom Tillis has hurt the great people of North Carolina,” Trump wrote. “Even on the catastrophic flooding, nothing was done to help until I took office. Then a MIRACLE took place! Tillis is a talker and complainer, NOT A DOER!”

Tillis was one of only two Republicans who voted against advancing the 1,000-page bill, which outlines Trump’s major agenda items heading into the 2024 election. The legislation passed narrowly in a 51-49 Senate vote after days of behind-the-scenes wrangling and last-minute changes.

Tillis cited major concerns for his state, claiming the bill would slash $38.9 billion in federal Medicaid funding for North Carolina. But Trump wasn’t buying it—and said Tillis’s opposition puts him even lower than another frequent GOP critic, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

“He’s even worse than Rand ‘Fauci’ Paul!” Trump posted.

Trump’s anger didn’t stop at insults. On Saturday, he made it clear he’s looking to replace Tillis in the next primary.

“Numerous people have come forward wanting to run in the Primary against ‘Senator Thom’ Tillis,” Trump wrote. “I will be meeting with them over the coming weeks, looking for someone who will properly represent the Great People of North Carolina and, so importantly, the United States of America.”

The clash highlights growing tension inside the Republican Party as Trump continues to shape its future—and signal what happens to those who don’t fall in line.
