In the wake of former President Donald Trump’s conviction on 34 felony charges, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has faced a deluge of death threats, reflecting a disturbing trend of political violence encouraged by Trump’s rhetoric.
According to recent reports by NBC News, over the past three months alone, the office has received numerous death threats targeting District Attorney Alvin Bragg, his family, and his staff. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has been involved in investigating and addressing these threats, having logged more than 500 threatening communications since April, including menacing phone calls and letters. Additionally, there were two bomb threats directed at individuals associated with Trump’s New York criminal trial on its first day.
NYPD Sergeant Nicholas Pistilli highlighted the explicit nature of some threats, which included messages like “we will kill you all,” “you are dead,” “your life is done,” and “RIP.” The threats also extended to social media, where posts depicted sniper crosshairs on individuals involved in the case or their family members, and disclosed the home addresses of DA office employees.
MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace underscored that some threats carried racist undertones, noting one that featured an image of a noose around Bragg’s neck alongside a threatening message. Legal analyst Lisa Rubin further emphasized the severity of the threats, revealing that investigators deemed some too graphic to publicly disclose.
Rubin expressed deep concern over the extent of the threats, suggesting that those shared with the public likely represent only a fraction of the total. “If these are the threats they chose to reveal,” Rubin remarked, “imagine what remains undisclosed.”
“The universe of threats to Alvin Bragg, and the people around him working with him are far larger in all likelihood than that which we can know,” she said. “As bad as the images are that I saw today, and had to describe for you and our colleagues, I want us all to pause and think about: If those are the ones that they chose to share with us, imagine what else is out there that we haven’t seen.”
Despite Trump’s conviction and the imposition of a gag order by Judge Juan Merchan, Trump’s legal team’s attempts to lift the order have been unsuccessful. The order restricts Trump from making extrajudicial statements targeting jurors, witnesses, court staff, and their families until his sentencing on July 11. However, Bragg’s office has indicated willingness to lift the gag order for certain witnesses, potentially allowing Trump to resume attacks on figures like his former attorney Michael Cohen and adult film star Stormy Daniels.
With Trump’s legal situation intensifying, the atmosphere of intimidation and fear around the DA’s office underscores the broader implications of political rhetoric fueling violence.
