President Donald Trump has said he would be excited about a potential matchup with former President Barack Obama if both were to run for an unconstitutional third term in office.
Trump and some of his supporters have floated the idea of a possible Trump 2028 campaign. “We’re working on it,” Steve Bannon said recently. “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives, let’s say that. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is.”
On Sunday, Trump hinted that he could run again.
“You know, a lot of people would like me to do that,” Trump said. “There are, there are methods which you could do it, as you know.”
The 22nd Amendment says no one can be elected to the presidency more than twice.
On Monday, while sitting in the Oval Office with musician Kid Rock, Trump answered questions from reporters. Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked Trump if he thought the Democrats might try to run Barack Obama against him if he were allowed to seek a third term.
“I’d love that,” Trump replied. “That would be a good one. I’d like that. No, people are asking me to run. And there’s a whole story about running for a third term. I don’t know. I never looked into it. They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that. But I have not looked into it.”
Franklin Roosevelt is the only president to serve more than two terms, having won four elections between 1932 and 1944. The 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms, was passed in 1951 after Roosevelt’s presidency. Before that, it was typical for presidents to step down after two terms, like George Washington did when he chose not to run for a third term in 1796.
To repeal the 22nd Amendment, two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, plus three-fourths of the states, would need to approve it.
