Former President Donald Trump has teased a “big, big surprise” for Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections, claiming that blue states might “totally disappear off the map.”
Trump dismissed the usual expectation that the party in power would lose seats in Congress during midterm elections. He confidently stated that his Republican Party would stay in control of the federal government after the 2026 elections.
Speaking to the Republican Governors Association, Trump said, “I think the midterms are going to be a big, big surprise.” He reminded everyone that, traditionally, the president’s party doesn’t do well in midterms, but he believes Republicans are very popular right now.
He also pointed out that he has raised $608 million for the campaign and plans to spend it helping his allies. Trump warned Democratic states, saying, “The red states are going to do good, and the blue states, I don’t know, maybe they’ll totally disappear off that map.”
A recent CBS News poll showed that voters are pleased with Trump’s performance, calling him “tough,” “energetic,” “focused,” and “effective.” The Cook Political Report also gave Republicans an edge to maintain control of the Senate in 2026, though Democrats need to pick up four seats to take back the majority.
In the House, Republicans hold a narrow three-seat majority. To keep control, House Republicans are working on strategies, including rallying Trump supporters.
“Trump — he’s still here,” said Rep. Richard Hudson, who chairs the National Republican Congressional Committee. “He’s still the incumbent president. He still can do rallies and be in mail pieces, and so he’s an incredible partner for us.”
Even though Trump can’t run for president again, he’s still been collecting funds. He can use this money to help his political allies and influence the elections.
“We’ve made a lot of progress,” Trump said, referring to his time in office. “We’re giving credit for having the best four weeks that anybody’s ever had as an opening. So now a few more weeks like this and we’re going to be in great shape.”
Trump has already started to reshape the federal government by cutting programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as gender discrimination protections. He’s also focused on limiting government spending and tightening border security.
His supporters have been generous, with Trump raising $608 million in just three weeks. “Can you believe that?” he joked. “So we’ve got that money, and I got to spend it somewhere.” He added that since he’s not allowed to run again, he’ll be using the funds to help his “friends.”
Trump also took a jab at Democrats, calling their stance on issues like gender in sports a losing strategy. “I say we become the party of common sense,” he said. “Men in women’s sports is not a winner for them.”
