What was supposed to be a glitzy, tightly controlled night in Washington quickly turned into chaos.
Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were abruptly evacuated Saturday night after gunfire was reported during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
According to reporters inside the room, three to four loud bangs rang out while Trump was on stage. Within seconds, the mood shifted from formal to frantic.
People dove under tables. Others scrambled for cover.
Secret Service agents rushed Trump, Melania, and key officials out of the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner has been held for decades.
For several tense moments, no one knew exactly what was happening.
The United States Secret Service later confirmed a suspect was in custody and said the shooting occurred near the security screening area guests pass through before entering the event.
“The president and first lady are safe,” officials said, adding that law enforcement is still assessing the situation and the condition of those involved remains unclear.
Inside the ballroom, the scene was anything but calm.
Guests—midway through dinner—hit the floor. Some crawled. Others used serving trays as makeshift shields. At one point, a chant of “USA” broke out as confusion and adrenaline took over.
One person could be heard yelling, “Move, move!” as panic spread.
Roughly five minutes later, attendees began cautiously emerging from under tables, still unsure if the danger had passed.
Despite the chaos, there were early signs the event might continue.
Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents Association, told the room the program would resume. There were also reports Trump himself wanted to return—though given the confusion and security concerns, that seemed unlikely.
Trump later took to Truth Social to weigh in, praising law enforcement and suggesting the show should go on—while acknowledging the night had already taken a dramatic turn.
“Quite an evening in D.C.,” he wrote. “Secret Service and Law Enforcement did a fantastic job… The shooter has been apprehended… we’ll just have to do it again.”
Translation: the night was blown up—literally and figuratively.
