President Donald Trump went off on a disjointed rant about waste, fraud, and abuse during a speech at the White House on Wednesday, including a strange mention of a “new theory” involving magnets.
Trump was asked how he could be sure that Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency was doing a good job at cutting spending.
“There’s tremendous fraud,” Trump said. “It’s hard to believe that there can be that much fraud… What we’re going to do is tomorrow, I’m having a news conference. I’m going to read to you some of the names of the companies and projects that have gotten hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars.”
He then turned to a reporter, saying, “And if you tell me we should be giving money to these things, you probably need to leave, because you’re not very talented.” He added that billions of dollars are being wasted illegally.
Trump also pointed fingers at Boeing without offering any proof. “You know, Boeing, we’re not happy with the service we’re getting from them on those planes,” he said. “Look at the Gerald Ford aircraft carrier. It was supposed to cost $3 billion, but it ended up costing $18 billion.”
He went on to explain that the carrier uses “magnetic elevators” to lift planes, instead of more reliable hydraulic systems. “They’re using magnets to lift up 25 planes at a time, 20 planes at a time,” he said. “It’s a new theory. Magnets are supposed to lift the planes, but it doesn’t work. And they had billions of dollars in cost overruns.”
