President Donald Trump blasted Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) on Friday after the senator traveled to El Salvador to check on the welfare of Kilmar Abrega Garcia, an immigrant wrongfully deported by the Trump administration.
Trump took to his Truth Social account to vent his frustration, accusing Van Hollen of turning the situation into a publicity stunt, even though the senator succeeded in meeting with Garcia and confirmed that he was safe and unharmed.
“Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland looked like a fool yesterday standing in El Salvador begging for attention from the Fake News Media, or anyone,” Trump wrote. “GRANDSTANDER!!!”
Garcia’s deportation was acknowledged by the Trump administration, and experts have said the U.S. government is ignoring a Supreme Court order to bring him back. However, no court has yet taken action against the administration for not complying.
In the same week, Trump also suggested sending American citizens to El Salvador and told the country’s president, Nayib Bukele, to build five more megaprisons to house “home-grown” American criminals.
