President Donald Trump called for MSNBC hosts Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow to resign after they criticized his decision to honor a 13-year-old cancer survivor during his joint address to Congress.
In an Oval Office interview on Thursday, Trump blasted the two hosts and MSNBC as a whole. “Worse than CNN is ‘MS-DNC,’ which is the worst. And the good news is very few people watch them anymore,” he said.
Trump was especially critical of Nicolle Wallace. “They have lost such credibility; and, frankly, what Nicolle Wallace said — I’ve never been a fan of hers, and she’s not very talented — but I’ll tell you, what she said the other day about that young man is disgraceful. She should be forced to resign,” Trump remarked.
He also attacked Rachel Maddow, saying, “And Rachel Maddow should be forced to resign. Nobody watches her anyway. I don’t know if — it’s not possible they pay her as much money as I hear — but certainly she’s lost all credibility.”
Trump’s comments came after Wallace and Maddow criticized his decision to honor DJ Daniel, a 13-year-old brain cancer survivor, during his address. “Tonight, DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service,” Trump had announced during the speech.
Wallace and Maddow both accused the president of politicizing Daniel’s cancer survival. “For the record — and this is disgusting — the president made a spectacle out of praising a young man who’s thus far survived pediatric cancer, as if the president had something to do with that,” Maddow said. She also pointed out the cuts to cancer research that were happening under Trump’s administration. “This was in the midst of him praising DOGE. The DOGE cuts, among other things, have cut off funding for ongoing research into pediatric cancer,” Maddow added.
Wallace also criticized Trump’s policies. “Problem is, in the beauty of that child is the tragedy of the Trump presidency, because we don’t know how he survived pediatric cancer, but it is likely he benefited from some sort of cancer research. And it is a fact that Trump has slashed cancer research,” Wallace said. She then linked her criticism to Trump’s actions related to the January 6th Capitol attack, suggesting that Daniel might one day face danger while serving as a law enforcement officer.
“I hope he has a long life as a law enforcement officer, but I hope he never has to defend the United States Capitol against Donald Trump’s supporters and if he does, I hope he isn’t one of the six who loses his life to suicide,” Wallace remarked. “And I hope he isn’t one that has to testify against the people who carried out acts of seditious conspiracy and then lived to see Donald Trump pardon those people.”
Wallace’s remarks caused a stir among conservative commentators. Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk condemned her comments as “the most repulsive comment I’ve heard in a very long time,” while others, like former Georgia state representative Vernon Jones, called for her firing.
