Donald Trump made a bizarre and extraordinary claim during an address to his supporters in New York City, asserting that his US-Mexico border wall was just three weeks from completion when he left the White House. This statement starkly contrasts with the reality that only a fraction of the barrier had been erected by January 2021. Trump also accused the Biden administration of dismantling the wall and selling it off.
“We were going to put it up within a period of three weeks,” Trump told the crowd at Crotona Park in the South Bronx on Thursday. “It was all built, laying there ready to be put up. Designed by the Border Patrol who are incredible people, ICE are incredible people all together. I wanted to put up concrete plank for the contractors here. They didn’t want it, they had to have hardened steel. They wanted 6000, 7000 pound concrete they wanted it rebar in the middle. They wanted different materials harder to cut. So we had very hard steel, very good stuff, everything was good,” he said.
“And we had the panel on top was called an anti-climb panel. We had the best wall and it was going to be 200 miles of wall, and it would have taken about three weeks,” he continued. “And then we had the rigged election. And you know what happened? After the rigged election, they took the wall, and instead of putting it up they sold it for five cents on the dollar.”
Trump also claimed that “illegal migrants are building an army” and promised a major mass deportation operation should he regain the Oval Office, pledged to indemnify police officers against prosecution, and praised Hungary’s “strongman” prime minister Viktor Orban.
