Republicans defending Donald Trump may have officially outdone themselves — and it’s hilarious. Over the weekend, some GOP lawmakers and media figures walked straight into a trap set by Democrats with military experience: reminding service members they do not have to follow illegal presidential orders.
The fallout was on full display during MS NOW’s Morning Joe, where co-host Joe Scarborough didn’t hold back in calling out a Republican pundit who appeared on CNN. The comments came after Trump fired off accusations of sedition and even threats of hanging aimed at Democrats who participated in a video telling military members they do not have to obey illegal orders.
“I’ve got to say, some people in the MAGA mediasphere made total idiots of themselves this weekend by trying to take the word ‘illegal’ out of what Democrats are saying. They made fools of themselves,” Scarborough said bluntly.
He tore apart the argument made by the unnamed Republican, pointing out a basic military principle: “Like people — I saw one lughead who goes on CNN regularly saying, ‘They are clearly trying to take down the chain of command,’” he said. “No! This is, if he knew anything about the military, he would know that when they raise their right hand, they swear an oath. They swear an oath to the Constitution to not follow illegal orders.”
Scarborough even praised the Democratic move — something he admitted he didn’t expect to say: “I can’t believe I have to say that, this was a brilliant move. I cannot believe I’m even saying this about the Democratic Party. This was a brilliant move by Democrats for two reasons.”
First, it forced Republicans into a corner, defending the indefensible: “One, they have Republicans actually defending illegal orders — like these people in the MAGAshpere,” he laughed before repeating, “Like people — I saw one lughead who goes on CNN. They’re so stupid that they’re defending illegal orders. So bravo, Democrats there. Like they played right into your trap.”
